Dual Seismic Migration Velocities in Seismic Swarms

چکیده
Fluid-induced earthquake sequences generally appear as expanding swarms activating a particular fault. The recent analysis of swarm in the Corinth rift has revealed dual migration pattern, with global slow expansion (m day?1) and episodes rapid (km day?1). Such are interpreted fluid diffusion, which ignores possibility static, dynamic, or aseismic triggering existence migration. Here, we propose new model for such swarms, where earthquakes consist failure asperities on creeping fault infiltrated by fluid. For that, couple rate-and-state friction, nonlinear diffusivity, elasticity along 1D interface. This reproduces speeds observed real swarms. We show that increase linearly mean pressurization not dependent hydraulic traditionally suggested.

Seismic Velocity Estimation from Time Migration Velocities
We address the problem of estimating seismic velocities inside the earth which is necessary for obtaining seismic images in regular Cartesian coordinates. We derive a relation between the true seismic velocities and the routinely obtained so called ”time migration velocities”, which are some kind of mean velocities. We formulate an inverse problem and show that it is ill-posed. We suggest three...
متن کاملMigration of Seismic Data
Prospecting for oil and gas resources poses the problem of determining the geological structure of the earth's crust from indirect measurements. Seismic migration is an acoustic image reconstruction technique based on the inversion of the scalar wave equation. Extensive computation is necessary before reliable information can be extracted from large sets of recorded data. In this article, a col...
متن کاملDetecting seasonal variations in seismic velocities within Los Angeles basin from correlations of ambient seismic noise
S U M M A R Y We analyse 3 yr of continuous seismic records from broad-band stations of the Caltech Regional Seismic Network (CI) in vicinity of the Los Angeles basin. Using correlations of ambient seismic noise, relative velocity variations in the order of 0.1 per cent can be measured between all interstation pairs. It is the first time that such an extensive study between 861 interstation pai...
متن کاملTime-shift imaging condition in seismic migration
Seismic imaging based on single-scattering approximation is based on analysis of the match between the source and receiver wavefields at every image location. Wavefields at depth are functions of space and time and are reconstructed from surface data either by integral methods (Kirchhoff migration) or by differential methods (reverse-time or wavefield extrapolation migration). Different methods...
متن کاملEstimating seismic velocities at ultrasonic frequencies in partially saturated rocks
Seismic velocities in rocks at ultrasonic frequencies depend not only on the degree of saturation but also on the distribution of the fluid phase at various scales within the pore space. Two scales of saturation heterogeneity are important: (1) saturation differences between thin compliant pores and larger stiffer pores, and (2) differences between saturated patches and undersaturated patches a...
